Boxer

During any 15-round match, I spend at least a minute or two unconscious. A hit to the head sends you home, to bed. Then you wake up and you’re under the hot lights and there’s a guy who wants to take your head off. That’s what all the people want to see, and they say so, nice and loud. Believe me, it wakes you up. What I like most about the gym is, it’s quiet. Nobody talks loud here.

Pugile

Durante qualsiasi incontro di quindici riprese, sono sicuro di passare un minimo di due minuti completamente KO. I ganci alla testa ti spediscono a casa, a letto. Poi ti svegli e sei sotto le luci roventi e c’è uno che ti vuole decapitare. La gente vuole vedere questo e lo dicono, chiaro, tondo e forte. Credimi, ti sveglia. Ciò che mi piace della palestra è il silenzio. Qui nessuno urla.

Flower Lady

Flowers are my children and I sell them. People buy flowers to make their houses more happy, or else they buy them to give a sick friend. Children get flowers so they can learn to keep a life alive, and be responsible. When nobody buys flowers, my children die, but I can’t be too sad. That’s business.

Fioraia

I fiori sono i miei bambini e li vendo. La gente compra fiori per rallegrare le loro case, o per regalarli agli amici malati. Danno fiori ai ragazzi per insegnarli a mantenere viva una vita, a essere responsabili. Quando nessuno compra fiori, alcuni miei bambini muoiono, ma non posso essere troppo triste. Sono solo affari.

Dry Cleaner
After so many years, I think I should know what clean means, but I don’t. Maybe because the fluids I breathe are too strong. That’s why I’m popular with my customers. My imagination must be clean, but I can’t get a picture of it any more. 

Tintoria
Dopo tanti anni, immagino che dovrei capire ciò che significa pulito, ma non è così. Forse perché i fluidi che utilizzo sono troppo forti. Così si creano clienti fedeli. La mia coscienza dev’essere molto pulita, ma non riesco più a farmene una immagine.

Barber

The first time I walked by Barber College, I thought it was funny. Like, hey here’s a college I could get into. And it wasn’t even as hard as I thought. You use the clippers like a paintbrush that erases. The comb tells the scissors where to cut, if you move your hands right. The main thing is to make the guy in the chair look the way he thinks he ought to look, which is better than when he walked in here.

Barbiere

La prima volta che passai L’Istituto per Parrucchieri mi venne da ridere. Ehi finalmente una scuola dove forse riuscirò a prendere bei voti. E non era nemmeno difficile come credevo. Si usa la macchinetta tosatrice come un pennello che cancella. Il pettine indica alle forbici dove devono tagliare, se sai muovere le mani. La cosa importante è fare in modo che il tizio sulla poltrona girevole abbia l’aspetto che crede dovrebbe avere, cioè meglio di com’era quando è entrato.
